Planet has entered the Japanese market to provide Tax Free solutions for shoppers and retailers in one of the world’s most dynamic tourism markets.
Founded more than 35 years ago, Planet enables retailers globally to accept payments, offer currency conversion and process VAT refunds through connected technology designed to improve the international shopping experience. The company serves customers in over 120 markets and operates one of the world’s largest tax refund networks.
To facilitate the move, Planet has become a major investor in the Japanese business of Global Tax Free and through the partnership, will be operating as Planet within Japan.
The investment comes at a pivotal time, as the Japanese government prepares to overhaul its Tax Free system for foreign visitors. Starting in November this year, Japan will move from an “in-store” tax exemption system – where tourists present their passports and pay a VAT-free price at the register – to a “refund after validation” model. Under the new rules, travellers can request their tax refund as they leave the country.
Gary Byrne, President Tax Free at Planet, said:
“We have been closely tracking tourism growth in Japan and supporting global brands in this critical market. Becoming a major investor in Japan reflects our expanding geostrategy and a clear buy-and-build approach as regulatory change accelerates opportunity for merchants and operators alike.”
Why this matters
- For shoppers: Planet’s technology helps travellers identify Tax Free eligibility at the point of sale, progress and track tax refunds digitally, and reduce manual processes – improving the customer experience and shortening waiting times as cross border travel strengthens.
- For retailers: Integrated payments and Tax Free services can encourage higher spending travellers while simplifying instore operations by reducing reliance on fragmented systems.
- For the Japanese market: Early investment and stronger distribution are expected to support retailers as international footfall rises and cross border spending accelerates.
Byrne added:
“Luxury retail is firmly established and, in particular, intraregional travel across Asia continues to strengthen, as travellers are increasingly choosing Japan. We have ambitions for this partnership to offer more of Planet’s solutions in time. If we are to deliver truly a global service to retailers, Japan is a market we’re excited to cover.”
A market defined by scale
Japan attracts more than twice as many foreign visitors as comparable regional markets, while total tourism spending is significantly larger, demonstrating long-term potential for Tax Free retail.
The partnership combines Global Tax Free’s local infrastructure with Planet’s global luxury brand relationships, expanding sales coverage across midmarket and enterprise retailers and strengthening connections with international brands.
Byrne concluded:
“Travel is strengthening across the region, luxury is present, and merchants increasingly want partners who can operate globally with local expertise. This partnership adds another strategic pin on the map and strengthens the service we deliver to retailers worldwide.”
